Benchmark indices snapped four-day winning run on Thursday after hawkish tones from the US Federal Reserve deflated the stock market bulls’ enthusiasm. Rising yields also did not help the morale. The 30-share pack Senex dropped 621.31 points or 1.03 per cent to close at 59,601.84. The index recovered about 300 points from the day’s low. Its broader peer NSE Nifty fell 179.35 points or 1 per cent to 17,745.90. Index heavyweights were among the biggest casualties of the day. Investors are expecting the Reserve Bank of India to also tighten the money supply. Moreover, increasing pandemic restrictions are also worrying them.

The US Fed’s hawkish stance has not been a surprise, but the negative market reaction today is primarily due to the indication of balance sheet reduction in the Fed minutes. Almost all members showed concern on rising inflation and the possibility of accelerating rate hikes followed by a reduction in the balance sheet. Although the timing remains uncertain, market participants are now expecting this to happen sooner than later. In addition, the rising cases of Covid-19 around the globe have also increased the risk levels. Overall, we remain cautious in the markets right now.
