For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?’ Leuz et. al. found that it is ‘quite common’ for investors to lose money by buying into ‘pump and dump’ schemes.
So if you’re like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Credit Acceptance (NASDAQ:CACC). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it’s easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Quickly Is Credit Acceptance Increasing Earnings Per Share?
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you’d expect a company’s share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, Credit Acceptance’s EPS has grown 31% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we’d say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Not all of Credit Acceptance’s revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I’ve used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. While we note Credit Acceptance’s EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 83% to US$1.7b. That’s a real positive.

Are Credit Acceptance Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since Credit Acceptance has a market capitalization of US$8.5b, we wouldn’t expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$2.7b. That equates to 32% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. So it might be my imagination, but I do sense the glimmer of an opportunity.
It’s good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Credit Acceptance with market caps between US$4.0b and US$12b is about US$7.3m.
The CEO of Credit Acceptance only received US$1.9m in total compensation for the year ending . That’s clearly well below average, so at a glance, that arrangement seems generous to shareholders, and points to a modest remuneration culture. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Is Credit Acceptance Worth Keeping An Eye On?
You can’t deny that Credit Acceptance has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That’s attractive. If you need more convincing beyond that EPS growth rate, don’t forget about the reasonable remuneration and the high insider ownership. Each to their own, but I think all this makes Credit Acceptance look rather interesting indeed. You should always think about risks though.
