TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index was up in late-morning trading as the energy sector posted strong gains, while U.S. stock markets were also up.
The S&P/TSX composite index jumped 223.61 points at 19,680.32.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 81.54 points at 32,611.17. The S&P 500 index gained 30.16 points at 4,102.59, while the Nasdaq composite was up 121.98 points at 12,284.57.
The Canadian dollar traded for 78.03 cents US compared with 77.91 cents US on Thursday.
The September crude contract was up US$5.28 at US$101.70 per barrel and the September natural gas contract was down four cents at US$8.09.
The October gold contract was up US$9.40 at US$1,768.4 an ounce and the September copper contract was up eight cents at US$3.55 a pound.
